Rocktoberfest 2008

Temps went hot, but the vibe was hotter at the 8th annual Red River Gorge Rocktoberfest that took place October 10-12 2008. Over 600 people showed up for the Saturday night festivities of this three-day event, and collectively over the weekend, raked in nearly $25,000. The effort of the organizers of the event, event sponsors, and generous donations made the Rocktoberfest event possible, but the psych of the participants made the event a success.
As an annual event to raise money for the $30,000 mortgage on the PMRP, land privately owned by the RRGCC, Rocktoberfest is te RRGCC's main fundraising effort and recently with increased sponsorship has help match the annual mortgage payment. As one of the event sponsors, Petzl's contributions are directly helping achieve this goal. Last year, in conjunction with the Petzl RocTrip, the event raised over $32,000, a number bolstered by a $10,000 matching grant from the Petzl Foundation. This year, the event was nearly as successful, roping in over $25,000 during the weekend. With the help from UClimb clinics, entrance fees, sales of La Sportiva flip-flop and Keen shoes, the event met the mortgage over a four-week period.
None of this would have happened without the help of sponsors like Petzl, says Paul Vidal, member of RRGCC Board of Directors. With their help, I think next year we can double the participation. Expect it to be at least twice as big with more focus on involvement from the community.
In addition to providing a booth, and helping in the fundraising efforts, Petzl athletes such as Sonnie Trotter, Emily Harrington, Daniel Woods, Whitney Boland, Lisa Rands, and Stephanie Forte came to help teach clinics and support the event.
I thought the clinic was great and I have been integrating everything I've learned, says Michele Zezima, New York resident and participant in the Saturday clinics.I have a lot of work to do and a lot of goals for next time I'm back in Kentucky and for climbing in general.
In addition to clinics, Red Bull hosted a dyno comp. There was also an endurance comp on the PMRP, bands, food and more. We set a huge precedent for years to come, says Vidal, by essentially paying for the property with this event. This is just the beginning.
What can we expect for next year for Rocktoberfest? More people, bigger sponsors and a few surprises, says Vidal. Stay tuned for more in coming years.
